A TECHNICAL UPDATE ON RISKS AND THREATS
Surveyors must remain vigilant in identifying and reporting technical threats. What was once a popular concern can quickly be overshadowed by new challenges. In our generation, the threat of popular hysteria has had a profound impact on property valuation. This presentation aims to demonstrate that by understanding the fundamental principles, we can avoid exacerbating issues that may lead to negligence litigation against surveyors. In this talk Geoff Hunt will present outlines of four major emerging areas of risk for the profession:
  • Claims against surveyors regarding retro fit spray foam
  • The mis-selling of heat pumps and the resulting poor performance
  • The persistently inadequate explanation of condensation, which is causing serious harm to people
  • Exploring the need to address the performance of older roofs and chimneys in the context of worsening climate conditions
Geoffrey Hunt, Chartered Building Surveyor and Principal, Geoffrey Hunt Building Surveying Services
RETROFIT – OPPORTUNITIES AND THREATS
Residential retrofit is an opportunity for surveyors to help mitigate climate change…or is it a defects disaster waiting to happen? This talk will look at:
  • Retrofit British Standards – advice and other guidance
  • How retrofit is likely to go wrong
  • How surveyors can spot the defects and report on them
Larry Russen, Chartered Building Surveyor, Consultant Russen & Turner and Allied Surveyors
INVESTIGATION OF MOISTURE AND ITS EFFECTS ON TRADITIONAL BUILDINGS - JPS 2022
THE LANDMARK COLLABORATIVE DOCUMENT This critically important document was published in September 2022 and is a collaboration of RICS, Historic England and the PCA. It provides a very clear framework for those who might be asked to conduct any form of moisture inspection on a traditional building. This talk will provide:
  • An explanation of the background to why this document was produced
  • Step-by-step guidance of the methodology now in place
  • Examples of the JPS 2022 in use
  • Looking ahead to the future
Dr Duncan Philips, Chartered Building Surveyor, RICS Building Conservation Steering Group
CONSERVATION OF HERITAGE BUILDINGS AND ASSETS - THE NEW RICS PROFESSIONAL STANDARD
To be published early in 2024, the brand new RICS Professional Standard - Conservation of Heritage Buildings and Assets.  It will provide information and expected standards for those who work in the heritage sector, or undertake building surveys, to maintain a high level of competence for the services provided. This talk will look at:
  • A sneak preview of the content in the brand new Professional Standard
  • How, and why, residential building surveys will exceed the existing content of a Level 3 survey
