This talk will provide an update on the risks associated with ionising radiation, looking at the doses of dental radiographs and CBCT, and comparing these doses to the doses from common medical imaging procedure and other sources of radiation in our environment. Practical tips will be provided on how to optimise doses to patients. An update will also be provided on the IRMER 2017 and IRR 2017 legislation, with a focus on the latest, second edition “Guidance Notes for Dental Practitioners on the Safe Use of X-ray Equipment.”

Following the covid pandemic we are back on track and doing what we do best. In this presentation Jo Russell will be looking at where we are now, immunisations needed, the chain of infection and more importantly, how we break it. NICE say that all healthcare professionals should be trained on spotting the signs of sepsis and deal with onward referral so we will be looking at how we can easily identify sepsis and manage the condition. The talk will conclude with hand hygiene, the importance of getting it right and what we are trying to remove.

It has been generally accepted that the incidence of mouth cancer within the UK population has consistently been increasing each year over the past three decades. However, in 2022 it became apparent, as predicted by the dental profession, that the reduced access to clinical services during Covid-19 pandemic would result in a greater number of patients subsequently presenting with relatively large tumours and increased metastatic spread to the lymph nodes in the neck. Both these features of mouth cancer are associated with a poor outcome. In 2023, never has an effective dental examination, in particular a head and neck soft tissue examination, been so important for the public. The updated Delivering Better Oral Health guidance for the UK contains sections related to mouth cancer to hopefully address these problems, in addition to presenting clinical actions required for cancer prevention going forward into 2023. All dental professionals should also be able to recognise the different forms of skin cancer that may develop in the facial tissues or within the neck and be able to refer suspected malignancies to secondary healthcare services.

Raj Rattan MBE BDS MFGDP FFGDP Dip.MDE FICD FFLM Raj Rattan’s portfolio career includes over 30 years’ clinical experience in general dental practice. He owned and operated a small practice group combining this with his involvement dental foundation training. Raj was a programme director for some 15 years before taking up the role of Strategic Associate Dean for foundation training at the London Deanery. He has been an examiner for the FGDP and has been appointed an examiner for the faculty of forensic and legal medicine. Raj has provided consultancy services to individuals and organisations including the NHS, Denplan, dental corporates and the Department of Health, where he has previously served as a Policy Adviser. He is the author/co-author of many textbooks on different aspects of general dental practice and has contributed articles to dental publications. He is well respected and popular international speaker. He worked a part-time dento-legal consultant at Dental Protection for many years before taking up his current role as Dental Director in 2016.

The incidence of all types of abuse and neglect has significantly increased since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, meaning it is more important than ever for dental teams to be vigilant about recognising potential or actual safeguarding issues. How you deal with these issues will make a difference to the victims so it is essential that dental teams know how best to respond to safeguarding concerns.
